Williamsburg International FC defeated Mineola Portuguese 6-1 on Sunday to advance to the next round of the ENYSSA Flamhaft State Cup.
The Doylies’ Firsts couldn’t match the drama of supplied by the Reserves earlier in the day, with their late-equalizer and win on PKs.
But then it would’ve been quite dramatic had their been any drama at all, as the Doylies continued their long tradition of dismantling LISFL teams in the early rounds. All-time, Williamsburg International has a 5-0 record versus LISFL opponents, outscoring them 30-6.
A 5-0 first half put it beyond doubt, with the first goal scored before WIFC had 11 men on the field. Mineola slipped through to threaten once or twice early in the first half, with a good strike from close range striking the crossbar.
With acres of space in all areas of the pitch, patient passing sliced open Mineola over and over again. The usual suspects provided the assists and goals, but the important thing to note on the day is that everybody played well. And Gerald van den Berg scored.
In the second half, with the thrill of the kill worn off, the edge just wasn’t as sharp. Despite multiple chances, the Doylies only mustered one more goal, and that came after allowing one.
This clean sheet killer could only be blamed on the keeper, who made a bad pass, then committed a foul, and followed it up by setting up a bad wall and positioning himself even more poorly. Such are the risks of the luxury of letting your keeper daydream all day.
The Firsts will have to wait to see who their opponent will be in the next round of the cup as several LISFL teams must play-in to the round of 32. The winner of Kosmos vs. Olympiacos NY will face Ossining Portuguese. The winner of the second match will go on to play the Doylies in their next cup date.
Williamsburg resumes their league campaign next week at Bushwick Inlet Park against conference leaders Stal Mielec, who are off to a blazing 4-0-0 start.
